The Laney College football community is mourning the tragic loss of former coach John Beam, who was fatally shot on the Oakland campus where he dedicated decades to nurturing athletes, programs, and the local community. Law enforcement reported on Monday that 27-year-old Cedric Irving Jr. has been formally charged with murder in relation to Beam’s untimely death.
According to Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson, if convicted, Irving could face a sentence of 50 years to life. He is also facing additional charges for allegedly firing the bullet that led to Beam’s fatal injury, as well as targeting a victim considered particularly vulnerable due to Beam’s age, highlighting the severity of the crime.
At the age of 66, Beam was more than just a coach; he was a revered figure in Oakland football, known for his impactful tenure at Laney College spanning over two decades and his earlier coaching role at Skyline High School. His deep-rooted connections with players and his unwavering commitment to uplifting programs earned him recognition, including a feature in Netflix’s 2020 season of Last Chance U. Although he retired from coaching last year, Beam continued to serve as the athletic director, a role that allowed him to influence even more young lives.
“He truly represented the spirit of Oakland. He was an irreplaceable part of our community,” stated Jones Dickson, reflecting on Beam’s legacy and profound impact.
According to police reports, officers were dispatched to Laney’s athletic field house late Thursday morning, where they discovered Beam with a critical gunshot wound to the head. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The probable-cause documents reveal that Irving was apprehended just hours later at a Bay Area commuter rail station, allegedly carrying the weapon used in the shooting. Police indicated that Irving confessed to the crime, describing the incident as “very targeted,” but withheld details regarding a motive. Notably, Irving had no prior criminal background.
The shocking shooting occurred during an unsettling week for Oakland schools, which included another incident where a student was shot at Skyline High School just a day earlier, prompting widespread lockdowns in both institutions.
Beam’s coaching career at Laney began in 2004, culminating in his appointment as head coach in 2012. He guided the team to two league championships and successfully mentored over 20 players who progressed to the NFL. He will be remembered not just as a coach but as a mentor and father figure to countless young athletes throughout his remarkable four-decade career.
