The United States of America produced a commanding all-round performance to defeat Namibia by 31 runs in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, USA made full use of the conditions, piling up an imposing 199 for 4 in their 20 overs. The foundation was laid by captain Monank Patel, who struck a fluent 52 off 30 balls, peppering the boundary with three fours and three sixes. Alongside him, Shayan Jahangir added a brisk 22, and the pair raced to 68 before Willem Myburgh provided Namibia their first breakthrough.
Although USA lost wickets at regular intervals through the middle overs — including Saiteja Mukkamalla for 17 and Patel shortly after his half-century — the innings never lost momentum. The turning point came with the arrival of Sanjay Krishnamurthi, who delivered a breathtaking display of power-hitting. Unbeaten on 68 from just 33 deliveries, Krishnamurthi smashed four boundaries and six towering sixes at a strike rate exceeding 200. His calculated assault in the death overs ensured USA surged past the 190 mark.
Milind Kumar contributed a valuable 28 off 20 balls before falling late in the innings, while Shubham Ranjane’s cameo of 5 from 2 deliveries added the finishing touch. For Namibia, Willem Myburgh was the standout bowler with 2 for 22 in his four overs, while captain Gerhard Erasmus also claimed two wickets. However, the rest of the attack struggled to contain the aggressive American batting line-up.
Chasing 200 was always going to require a strong start, and Namibia responded positively. Louren Steenkamp led the charge with a spirited 58 off 39 balls, striking five fours and three sixes. He shared promising partnerships with Jan Frylinck (19) and Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton (28), helping Namibia reach 99 by the halfway stage and keeping the contest alive.
However, USA’s bowlers tightened the screws in the second half of the innings. Saurabh Netravalkar was economical and effective, finishing with 1 for 27 from his four overs. Shadley van Schalkwyk delivered a crucial spell, picking up 2 for 30, including the key wicket of Erasmus. Ali Khan also chipped in with an important breakthrough, dismissing Jonathan Smit for 31 just as Namibia threatened a late surge.
With wickets falling at regular intervals, the required run rate climbed steeply. Zane Green’s aggressive 18 ended in a tactical retirement, but Namibia ultimately finished on 168 for 6, falling short despite their early promise.
Krishnamurthi’s explosive knock earned him the Player of the Match award, as USA secured a comprehensive 31-run victory to strengthen their campaign in the tournament.
