The Toronto Blue Jays are dealing with an injury to an important member of the team. Catcher Alejandro Kirk has sustained a fracture.
The injury occurred on April 3 as the Toronto Blue Jays played the Chicago White Sox. Pitcher Jeff Hoffman threw the ball toward batter Austin Hays, who only caught a piece. The ball then slammed into Kirk’s glove hand before bouncing away as a foul.
The catcher immediately removed his glove and grasped the thumb on his left hand. The Blue Jays ultimately removed Kirk from the game while nursing a 4-3 lead. The White Sox made a comeback and won 5-4.

“He’s a warrior. It’s pretty damn hard to get him to come out of a baseball game,” said teammate Ernie Clement after the loss.
“You kind of knew it wasn’t good, so it’s just the next man up. We dealt with it last year, and guys would come in and step up. Guys who are here have to step up. We’ll be ready to roll.”
The Blue Jays responded to the injury by placing Kirk on the 10-day injured list. The team also recalled Brandon Valenzuela from Triple-A and made him active for the game against the White Sox. Though Tyler Heineman will take over the starting duties for the time being.
The team noted that Kirk, a 2025 All-Star, will head to Pennsylvania on Monday. He will meet with hand specialist Dr. Thomas Graham to determine the extent of the injury and his options.
It’s possible that Kirk could undergo surgery to repair the fracture. The Blue Jays noted that another possibility is having a pin inserted into the catcher’s thumb. The meeting will determine whether the All-Star misses mere weeks or more time.
The Mexico native has spent his entire MLB career with the Blue Jays. He made his debut for the team back in 2020 and has gone on to earn All-Star honors twice while playing a major role. He also earned Silver Slugger, an award recognizing the best offensive player at each position, in 2022.
